Boss wins Scobie Breasley medal - 09.08.2010

Champion jockey Glen Boss has added a prestigious award to his long list of credits, scoring an upset victory in the Scobie Breasley Medal - Victoria's major honour for jockeys in the 2009- 10 racing season.

Boss polled three votes for eight of his rides and a total of 46 votes to repel a late charge from four time winner Craig Williams(41) and Damien Oliver (39). Luke Nolen, who was favoured to win, polled 30 votes.

Votes are awarded by Racing Victoria stewards on a three-two-one basis for the best three rides at metropolitan meetings. Jockeys can receive multiple votes at the one meeting for the award, Victorian racing's equivalent to the Brownlow or Dally M.

The accolade came at the end of Boss's first full season in Melbourne after relocating from Sydney in November, 2008. Boss said he was virtually driven out of Sydney as he was unable to command rides.

"Everyone said G Boss is just a Group 1 jockey and doesn't really ride trackwork," he said in an emotional speech.
"I came to Melbourne with the mission to prove that I'm not that rider.
"I was determined to  show people that I would turn up and do the job every day just as I would on Group 1 days."
"I have done a lot of things in my life, but moving to Melbourne is the best thing I have done," Boss said
"I have loved every minute of it. It's a different culture, the Victorian jockeys work much harder than jockeys anywhere else in the country.
"I think my riding has improved since I came down here."
